Miley Cyrus and Rape Culture

Miley Cyrus "Bangerz" Tour - Anaheim, CaliforniaI saw an article from Policy Mic over the weekend that claimed that pop music farthas a rape problem because Miley Cyrus made a bad joke about rape at one of her concerts recently. It also identified Miley Cyrus as a feminist. I suspect most feminists would object to that characterization. The bigger issue, however, is that art (and I use that term very loosely in the case of Miley Cyrus) tends to imitate society. Miley posing doggie on top of a car makes her neither a feminist nor a trend setter. What it makes her is desperate to sell albums and concert tickets. Let me be clear, there is most definitely a rape culture problem in America. If we want to solve it, we are going to have to do a lot more than stop Miley Cyrus from making bad jokes about using a rape date drug to turn women into her sex partners at parties (was there ever a more transparent, desperate, or tasteless attempt to get attention?) and start having real conversations with real people on the streets. Most of those people couldn’t give a damn about Miley Cyrus, and she has about as much chance of influencing them as a popcorn fart might. At least she has assumed the right position…
