Reality?

As a general rule of thumb, we are encouraged to reorient people to reality who have lost touch with it. The exception is people who suffer from dementia, because we won’t succeed in reorienting them and the attempt to do so will only upset them. What of the people whose beliefs place them rather on the fringe of reality? The challenge is that if we come on too forcefully, there is a good chance they will run away and not listen to us. Unless their beliefs place themselves or someone else in imminent danger, the best approach may be patience and gentle nudging. Of course, we all have our limits, and there is nothing wrong with declaring ours and leaving the complicated task of helping these people become better grounded in reality to professionals!
