Broadening Our Perspective

While it is certainly true that nobody likes to listen to or read ideas that are offensive to them, it is important that we continue to expose ourselvestimthumb to a broad range of ideas and concepts. If we only expose ourselves to ideas that we agree with, we will find that over time our perspective becomes more and more narrow. While I certainly cannot imagine, for example, sitting down to watch hours and hours of Fox News, it is only through exposing myself to the ideas of those with whom I disagree that I can learn more about why I hold the opinions and perspectives that I do. In some ways, the brain resembles a muscle in that if we don’t use it, it will begin to atrophy. That should be reason enough to challenge ourselves every once in a while with ideas that are somewhat foreign to us. As the old saying goes, no pain, no gain.
