It’s easy in these days leading up to New Year’s Day to look back on the previous year and focus primarily on regrets, but such a focus is very counterproductive. There is no point in beating ourselves up over areas where we believe – or where others have convinced us – that we have fallen short, because there is nothing about the past that we can change. It’s true that there are lessons to be learned from our past mistakes, but it really shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to determine what those lessons are. We are better served in turning our focus and our energies to putting those lessons into action than in beating ourselves up more than we already have. People who are beat up don’t have much energy left to implement positive change!
