Whenever we think of change, our impatience often tempts us to believe we can change the world in one pass. In our more lucid moments, we realize that is an impossible goal. Whether we are trying to change the world, our neighborhood, or ourselves, we would do well to set achievable goals that move us toward our goal rather than trying to go from start to finish in one step. By setting intermediate goals, we have a sense of achievement along the way rather than a black and white, all or nothing mentality almost certain to disappoint. Change takes time, and the bigger the change is the longer it takes. Recognizing that truth is an important first step.
