As westerners, we are obsessed with goals. When it comes to the spiritual path, being focused on achieving something can actually set us back. We wonder how fast we can become enlightened, how soon we can achieve union with God, when we will be fully awake – when the truth is all of those questions and concern take us away from what needs to happen, which is traversing our spiritual journey. In fact, I would say that we need to abandon the idea of getting anywhere completely and instead focus on being here now. There’s nothing more important.
