It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that spirituality has to do with other-worldly concerns and massive movements that implement dramatic change on the social or some other front. That appeals to us at least in part because it helps us escape from the day-to-day monotony of our lives. Here’s the bad news: spiritual teachers from every tradition agree that transformation occurs precisely in those boring, day-to-day events that we try to use spirituality to escape. It’s not in running away from doing the dishes that we find God, it is in doing the dishes with our complete attention and devotion that we find God. That’s bad news for dish pan hands, but good news for those of us without the time or money to go on pilgrimage to exotic and distant lands. We have all we need right here at home!
