I have been engaged in a project this year to read a classic work of Christian spirituality each month. One of the unanticipated challenges of that project is slogging through the beliefs of people who lived six hundred years ago about how God and the Universe worked and how Jesus acted in their lives. Even worse has been realizing that, six hundred years later, some people haven’t updated their views or even examined them critically. In fact, at times it’s so bad that I wonder how long it will be before religious adherents who refuse to critically examine their beliefs make believing in Jesus untenable for thinking people.
