Daily Teaching for Tuesday, December 24th

It’s Christmas Eve, the night when Jesus and Mary waited expectantly (no pun intended) for the birth of Jesus in the stable in Bethlehem – or, and in my mind more likely – at home in Nazareth since there is no historical mention of the census which supposedly led Mary and Joseph to travel to Bethlehem, causing Jesus to be born there. The wise men start following a star tonight and end up warning Jesus’ parents to flee to Egypt to avoid the slaughter of the innocents – but that slaughter is not recorded in the history of the time, either, nor does their lavishing of wealth upon the newborn Jesus and his parents seem to have changed their economic situation at all…

There are a lot of great stories in the mythology of every religious tradition. They all are true, and some of them actually happened, but if you think that what’s important about your beliefs is the historicity of your mythology I am afraid you are missing the point entirely. What’s important is that your life and your love are radically transformed.
