On this Labor Day we may well need to remember the reason for Labor Day anew. Americans work an unbelievable number of hours, quite often at more than one job, and it seems the deck is stacked against them. In an effort to avoid providing benefits, many employers no longer offer full time positions and many elected officials are little more than greed infused puppets of corporate America and do their will by trying to bust unions and act against the best interests of their constituents. This in turn leads to longer work hours, fewer parenting hours, the decline of the family, and an increase in street violence – to name but a few effects of our culture of greed.
A stable job, safe working conditions, and a living wage are what the labor movement and Labor Day are all about. The greed that would deprive anyone of these things is nothing less than evil.
