In the Christian Church, today is the Feast of the Epiphany which celebrates the visit of the three wise men from the east. It’s also known as the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles. In practical terms, it marked a significant transition in the religious thought of the time in that it was the beginning of a belief that God didn’t just love the Israelite people but in fact loved people from all nations. That’s a lesson that many Americans seem to have lost sight of with all of their “God Bless America” rhetoric. It’s also a lesson we need to reclaim if there is ever to be peace in the world.
