You cannot claim to be a person of faith – any faith – and fail to support the sick, the weak, the poor, the oppressed, the disadvantaged, the elderly, the young, or anyone else who hasn’t enough to eat, a roof over their head, clothing, and medical care at a minimum – no matter the reason.
Jesus criticized the Pharisees because they were avoiding their responsibility to care for their parents by claiming the money they would use to support them belonged to God. Things haven’t changed much, except that today’s Pharisees are politicians who believe they are God. As for their supporters, they are apostate.
