Moving beyond tribal thought and tribal religion requires learning to ignore the most basic instinct of human experience – the survival instinct. In contemporary life we rarely need to respond to our survival instinct. It makes us fearful of anything or anyone different from us, and it causes us to lash out violently when we are fearful or confused. It’s tribal fear that causes us to spend obscene amounts of money on defense at the expense of our children’s future and our ecology. When we hear people talking about “preserving our way of life,” we are hearing people attempt to manipulate us through our survival instinct. We simply must learn to refuse to be manipulated if we are to survive as a species and as a planet.
