I believe it is a developmental task that during our teens and twenties we place strong emphasis on systematic explanations of how things work – no matter what those things might be. Then, after some years pass, we come to realize that none of those explanations really helps us understand anything and the much more important issue becomes sharing our experiences with others who have had similar experiences. You might say that we start being concerned with explaining things and we move toward being more concerned about experiencing things. The latter is built on, and eventually replaces, the former.
