Daily Teaching for Tuesday, December 6th

Today is St. Nicholas’ Day, a day that can serve as a wonderful illustration of how different cultural traditions get blended together over time.  The real St. Nicholas, and there are differences of opinion about whether the “real” St. Nicholas was a legend or a real person, was in the habit of leaving money and other gifts at the homes of the poor.  In some cultures it is St. Nicholas who visits on Christmas Day, and it seems that some of his story became a part of the Santa Claus tradition.  He teaches us that traditions and practices evolve over time, and the “way things have always been” is a fiction created by those who are afraid of change.  Take some time today to research St. Nick!
