Sometimes I have some really random thoughts. Sometimes, I like to turn them into random questions. Here’s yours for today: If you were stranded on a desert island with one other person, and your choices were a conservative Protestant or a conservative Catholic, which would you choose?
Call me crazy, but if I believed in hell I think it would be a lot like being stranded on a deserted island with a conservative Protestant. All those attempts to convert you, to argue you into belief all the knocking on the door of your hut and asking “if you died tonight, where would you go”, all the nagging about almost anything spiritual – how could hell be worse than that? They probably would try to get me to hold an abortion protest sign even though there wouldn’t be any clinics on a deserted island.
On the other hand, conservative Catholics are folks who I would have no problem being stranded on a deserted island with. Generally speaking, they don’t try to argue anyone into belief, they evangelize by attraction rather than by beating down your door asking you about the salvation decision and other such nonsense, and their prayer life transcends the “gimme, gimme, gimme” so common to conservative protestant prayer. In fact, being stranded on a deserted island with a conservative Catholic would be a lot like going on retreat, which sounds pretty good to me.
Of course, the whole thing would work out a lot better if the person was female, but that’s another blog.
